NCLEX-RN
National Council Licensure Examination
The licensure exam every registered nurse must pass to practice in the U.S.
Prerequisites: Graduation from an approved nursing program
When: Immediately after graduation — this comes before everything else
BLS / ACLS
Basic & Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support
Core resuscitation credentials required by most employers; ACLS for acute settings.
Prerequisites: None (BLS); BLS for ACLS
When: BLS before your first job; ACLS during orientation in acute care
CMSRN
Certified Medical-Surgical Registered Nurse
Validates med-surg expertise; strengthens clinical ladder and transfer applications.
Prerequisites: 2 years and ~2,000 hours of med-surg practice
When: After ~2 years on a med-surg unit
CCRN
Critical Care Registered Nurse
The standard critical-care credential; effectively expected for CRNA school applicants.
Prerequisites: ~1,750 ICU hours in 2 years
When: After ~2 years in the ICU
CEN
Certified Emergency Nurse
Marks emergency nursing expertise; valued for trauma and flight roles.
Prerequisites: 2 years ED experience recommended
When: After ~2 years in the ED
NI-BC
ANCC Informatics Nursing Certification
The recognized informatics nursing credential — pursue after you're in the field, not before.
Prerequisites: RN + informatics practice hours or graduate credit
When: After ~2 years of informatics practice; not needed to land the first role
Epic Certification
Epic Application Certification
Vendor certification for building/configuring Epic modules; usually sponsored by an employer.
Prerequisites: Employer sponsorship for training
When: When hired into an analyst role — employers typically fund it
CNML
Certified Nurse Manager and Leader
Validates frontline nurse management competency (AONL/AACN).
Prerequisites: BSN + 2 years management experience (varies by degree)
When: After 1–2 years in a manager role
NE-BC
ANCC Nurse Executive Certification
Executive-level leadership credential for director+ roles.
Prerequisites: MSN or BSN + executive experience
When: When moving toward director and executive positions
CNL
Clinical Nurse Leader
Master's credential for point-of-care leadership focused on coordination and quality.
Prerequisites: CNL master's program
When: Only if targeting a CNL-designated role
NPD-BC
Nursing Professional Development Certification
The credential for staff development and clinical educator roles.
Prerequisites: RN + professional development practice hours
When: After ~2 years in an education role
CNE
Certified Nurse Educator
Academic nurse educator credential from the NLN.
Prerequisites: MSN + faculty experience
When: After establishing yourself in academic teaching
CPHQ
Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality
The standard quality credential; strengthens QI and patient safety candidacy.
Prerequisites: None formal; QI experience recommended
When: After ~2 years of quality work, or earlier to signal commitment
CIC
Certification in Infection Prevention & Control
The core infection preventionist credential.
Prerequisites: ~2 years infection prevention experience
When: After ~2 years in infection prevention
CCM
Certified Case Manager
The most recognized case management credential across hospital and payer settings.
Prerequisites: 12–24 months case management experience
When: After your first year in case management
CCRC
Certified Clinical Research Coordinator
Validates clinical research coordination expertise (ACRP).
Prerequisites: ~2 years research coordination experience
When: After ~2 years coordinating studies
LNCC
Legal Nurse Consultant Certified
The only LNC credential recognized by the AALNC.
Prerequisites: 5 years RN + 2,000 hours LNC practice
When: After building real case experience — not a starting point
NP Certification
National NP Board Certification (e.g., FNP-BC, AGACNP-BC)
Population-specific board certification required for NP licensure.
Prerequisites: MSN/DNP from an accredited NP program
When: Immediately after graduate school
CRNA (NBCRNA)
National Board Certification for Nurse Anesthetists
Required board certification for nurse anesthesia practice.
Prerequisites: Doctoral nurse anesthesia program + ICU experience

CNS Certification
ANCC/AACN Clinical Nurse Specialist Certification
Specialty CNS board certification required for APRN licensure as a CNS.
Prerequisites: MSN/DNP CNS program
When: Immediately after graduate school

Evidence-informed prep habits — not hype
- · Sequence, don't stack. One credential at a time. Parallel prep mostly multiplies stress, not knowledge.
- · Practice questions beat re-reading. Retrieval practice is the highest-yield study method for licensure-style exams.
- · Book the date. An unscheduled exam expands to fill your anxiety; a scheduled one shrinks to fit your calendar.
- · Failing a specialty cert is recoverable. Most allow retakes within months — the downside is smaller than it feels.
- · Ask about employer support. Many systems reimburse exam fees and give certification pay bumps — check before paying.
